Surprising ADHD traits
AKA learnings from a book I've been reading
Storytime:
I’m embarking on a side quest every month:
Learn 1 new skill (piano, sewing, writing a book, etc.).
What happened in my first month surprised me…

I set a goal: 5 min of piano practice daily
It’s how I’ve been able to stay so consistent with my habits:
Setting easy, simple habits.
But practicing piano was so fun for me,
I spent up to 2 hours a day on it
(And wrecked my sleep schedule 💀).
Another day, I was editing a video
I got really hungry and knew I should make dinner.
But I really wanted to finish editing my video.
For some reason, I just couldn’t tear myself away from the task…
It was so weird because usually, this is my process:
Start editing a video
Get distracted (message friends, reply to emails, stretch)
Go back to editing video
Get distracted again (talk to my sister, go to the gym, attend a meeting)
Finally finish editing video (while on a walk)
What happened?
Why was it so hard to switch tasks when usually I get distracted very easily?
All of this was “normal” to me until I read this ADHD book
I learned all about hyperfocusing on tasks I’m interested in.
And how my relationship with time is not normal
(Which is why I had to start tracking my time 24/7).
So I shared this screenshot on my Instagram story:

And so many people asked what book it was, I thought I’d share it with you via email too.
It’s called The ADHD Effect on Marriage (not sponsored lol).
I feel like I learned so much about myself through it - not only about things I always thought were normal, but also how to improve my relationships with others.
TLDR: focus on creating systems instead of feeling guilty/ashamed all the time.
Next week I’ll share a bit more about my systems and how they help 🫶
How was today's email? |
Til next Monday,
Jennifer
