How to stay consistent when you’re not disciplined

The stranger (now friend) that I talked to tracks his food and finances daily.

We spent 4 hours going over how he was able to do it so consistently, and how he uses his tracking to improve his life.

His secret to staying consistent?

Having a strong “why” that gives him intrinsic motivation.

He doesn’t do it for a reward.

He does it because tracking things help him make progress towards his goals.

Here are 3 more key insights I learned from him.

Insight 1: have a long-term vision to combat perfectionism

If you eat healthy throughout the week, and have a burger on the weekend…

That’s not going to impact your progress,

As long as you get back to your healthy meals throughout the week.

Similarly, if you started tracking your habits,

But forgot for a month or two because you got busy…

Don’t let that stop you from making progress.

Your action item: get clear on what your long-term goals are

Insight 2: discipline comes from getting clarity on your goals, and connecting them to action

This is why I started my unhinged life tracking course with setting clear goals.

If you know your goals well,

It’s easier to take action on them.

Your action item: figure out which habits align with your goals

Insight 3: reframe the actions to be less overwhelming

I struggle with meal prepping.

But my friend didn’t…

Because he thought of it as preparing “intentional leftovers.”

That reframing blew my mind.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed like I had to research recipes and plan out my meal prep,

I felt like I could just make a regular meal, but with larger portions.

That made it a lot easier to get started.
