Reframing how you work towards your goals
Yesterday I read a very insightful reflection posted in my course community.
Someone said they counted down to a goal their entire life.
Gradually, their counter would reach 0: the day they hit their goal.
But this led to negative feelings…
Feelings of stress and needing to hit a “deadline.”
As they went through the course, they realized:
They should count up towards their goal.
Instead of reaching day 0, they would reach day 90 out of 90.
Reframing it like that made them feel like they were making progress:
Like each day built upon the last.
Every day built more momentum, which was motivation to continue taking action.
Where do you want to be 1 year from now?
This exercise helps vibe check my current habits.
For example, I just talked to someone who wanted to start his content creation business.
He spent months looking for his perfect niche.
But I asked him:
“1 year from now, will you be proud of the progress you made if you continued today’s actions?
Or would you rather have posted every day, even if your niche or videos aren’t perfect?”
Of course, he picked the daily posting.
(Daily posting doesn’t have to be hard. I used to post 2 second videos of my desk with text on screen.)
Whenever you find yourself making excuses,
Ask:
What would my future self be grateful for?
How was today's email? |
Til next Monday,
Jennifer
P.S. if you’re curious about my course, I’m thinking of opening up a few spots before 2024 ends. Reply “yes” and I’ll send you the link to enroll!
