What impacted my happiness scores the most in 2023
A deep dive into my time tracking
I track my time 24/7 to see which habits help me lead the most fulfilling life.
Here are my findings so far.

2023’s happiest months
August and September had the highest happiness scores (8/10 on average).
So I looked at what I spent the most time on in those months.
Time with friends (and also time in the sun - since it was summer) had the most impact on my happiness.
2023’s worst month
My average mood in February was 7.1/10, which wasn’t bad.
But when I looked at the top 3 things I spent my time on, it became obvious why my mood was lower.
I spent 88 hours on social media, averaging to 22 hours per week on my phone.
That’s basically like a part-time job - except I felt like I was wasting time.
When my mood picked up again, it was because I started marathon training in March 2023.
Key takeaways
I already knew this (because of my psychology degree), but these had the greatest impact on my happiness:
Social connection
Time outdoors
Everything else I was doing (eating at my favourite restaurants, goal setting to find my purpose, etc.) didn’t have as much of an impact.
Even if I enjoyed working on a cool project, it didn’t bring me as much fulfillment as a good conversation with friends.
We talk about:
Career goals
Life purpose
Relationships
Self-improvement (boundary-setting, effective communication)
