Day 21 habit challenge: why you should stop having goals

How to trust the process instead

Day 21 of this challenge is kinda late to be telling you not to set goals.

But I’ll explain why.

P.S. yesterday, we learned about embracing imperfection. Catch up on previous posts here.

What happens when you set a goal?

How do you feel?

Sometimes, people tell me they feel anxious.

Especially when they miss a day of working towards their goals.

It feels like they’re off track, and won’t meet the goal anymore.

So it’s hard to stay consistent.

That’s why I focus on habits.

Yesterday I did a podcast interview.

The host was shocked I hadn’t read Atomic Habits.

But I talked about things like:

  • Focusing on the daily actions - and how they can add up even if you’re not perfectly consistent

  • Not caring about the goal (outcome) as much - just trusting the process

Example: worrying about whether I’ll finish this 30 day consistency challenge

The way I see it, there are 2 options:

  1. I complete the challenge and reach my goal

  2. I don’t complete the challenge, but I learn something new (about myself or about my work)

Either way, I learn something new and don’t see it as a “failure.”

So I’m not worrying about the future.

I’m only focused on what I can do today.

Instead of worrying whether my metaphorical flowers will bloom,

I spend more energy tending to them so they get enough water and sunlight.

So you shouldn’t just focus on the goal

Set it, then focus more on your daily habits.

That way your energy goes towards what matters most.

Were you consistent with your habits today?
