Day 18 habit challenge: focus on the first step

How to build momentum

Today’s email is simple.

Break down your habit into the first step, and work on just that.

It’s especially effective if you do it the night before.

P.S. yesterday, we learned about doing something small every day.

Catch up on previous posts here.

Example: exercise

If you want to go for a run every morning, lay out your running clothes the night before.

And make your focus just putting on those clothes.

You’ll build momentum to continue with the rest (going for a run).

Example: journaling

Focus on just getting a pen (or opening up your journaling app).

Example: eating healthier

Focus on just taking an apple out from the fridge.

Or if you don’t have anything in the fridge, focus on just creating a grocery list (ChatGPT can help).

What does this mean for you?

Step 1: Publicly commit to something so you feel accountable.

This can mean replying to my email telling me about your goals, or just sharing them with someone you know - even a journal.

Step 2: Do a little bit every day so it’s not overwhelming.

Focus on just getting that thing done; for me it’s writing 1 email.
